At CXO Gateway, we take pride in celebrating leaders whose careers exemplify dedication, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Today, we spotlight Rakesh Handoo, who has been appointed as Director – Marketing and Surface Care Business Unit at Nippon Paint Group.
His story is not just about professional milestones — it is about vision, transformation, and the ability to inspire change in every role he has undertaken. From managing sales on the ground to shaping global marketing strategies, Rakesh’s journey reflects what it truly means to be a leader in the ever-evolving world of business.
A Strong Foundation in Sales and Marketing
Rakesh’s career began in 2001 with ICI Paints, where he managed sales for one of the largest automotive aftermarket refinish paint markets in the country. His early experience gave him deep technical knowledge of automotive paints and processes, along with a sharp understanding of customer needs. This grounding prepared him for a dynamic career in industries where innovation, quality, and customer connection go hand in hand.
By 2004, at 3M, he expanded his portfolio, taking responsibility for sales across four states while gaining technical expertise in automotive collision repair. These years were a masterclass in building relationships, driving performance, and understanding how strong customer connect can shape market leadership.
Building Expertise at Bosch – A Global Mindset
In 2005, Rakesh joined Bosch Ltd, one of the world’s most respected technology and engineering brands. Over the next six years, he grew through multiple leadership roles:
- National Training Manager (India & SAARC): He designed and implemented large-scale product and sales training programs, emphasizing knowledge-sharing and capability building.
- Senior Manager – Brand Management: He spearheaded marketing and branding for the Accessories Business Unit, ensuring strong positioning and brand recall.
- Country Head – Marketing (India): He rose to lead business planning, strategy, and brand management for the Power Tools division, proving his ability to blend strategic thinking with execution excellence.
At Bosch, Rakesh not only shaped product and brand strategies but also learned the art of leading people through transformation — a lesson that would define much of his leadership journey ahead.
Expanding Horizons – Gates, Mirka, and Kärcher
After Bosch, Rakesh took on leadership roles at Gates Corporation and Mirka, driving marketing strategy, business management, and overall trade leadership. These experiences sharpened his ability to adapt across industries, from industrial solutions to automotive refinishing.
In 2014, he began a significant tenure at Kärcher India, a global leader in cleaning technology. Over nearly eight years, he held multiple leadership roles:
- National Sales Manager – Home and Garden
- General Manager – Home and Garden
- General Manager – E-commerce, Product Management, CRM and Training
At Kärcher, Rakesh mastered the balance of business growth, people management, and digital transformation. He emphasized change management, mentoring, and upskilling — proving his belief that when you build people, business success follows naturally. His leadership mantra was simple yet powerful: “Numbers follow when people are empowered.”
Driving Innovation and Growth at Nippon Paint
In 2023, Rakesh joined Nippon Paint India as General Manager – Marketing and New Business Development. His focus was on building marketing strategies, driving innovation, and opening new growth avenues for one of the world’s largest paint and coatings manufacturers.
Recognized for his results-driven leadership and strategic foresight, he was elevated in January 2025 to Director – Marketing and Surface Care BU at Nippon Paint Group. Based in New Delhi, he now leads the company’s marketing vision and surface care business, steering growth in one of the most competitive markets.
This milestone reflects his ability to think beyond short-term goals, envision long-term opportunities, and drive sustainable growth.
