Bringing clinical insight and operational leadership to improve care delivery
Kaiser Permanente has appointed Erin Knight as Chief Operating Officer. Erin arrives with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare operations, care transitions, social work and continuum-of-care management. Her background blends hands-on clinical work with executive operations — exactly the skill set Kaiser needs as it focuses on better care coordination and patient-centered delivery.
What she’ll lead
As COO, Erin will oversee operational strategy across the organization with an emphasis on:
- Improving patient experience and care coordination
- Driving operational efficiency across clinical and administrative functions
- Strengthening integrated models of care and continuity across settings
- Optimizing post-acute services, patient transfers and transportation operations
- Supporting cross-functional collaboration and workforce development
- Advancing long-term transformation initiatives that improve outcomes and access
Why her background matters
Erin has been part of Kaiser Permanente since 2021 and has steadily taken on broader operational responsibilities. Most recently she served as Interim COO and before that led Northern California’s continuum administrative operations — overseeing outside medical services, transfer centers and transportation. Those roles gave her direct experience simplifying patient flow and keeping care moving smoothly across sites.
Her earlier work at Sutter Health — from director roles in transitions of care and care coordination to hands-on social work — gave her a strong grounding in post‑acute strategy and multidisciplinary care. Erin began her career in patient- and family-facing roles at organizations including UCLA Medical Center and hospice and adoption services, which shaped her patient-first leadership approach.
What she brings
- Deep experience in care coordination and continuum-of-care management
- Strong operational skills in large, distributed health systems
- Practical knowledge of post-acute strategy, transfers, and transportation logistics
- A patient-centered perspective rooted in clinical social work
- Track record of building collaborative teams and improving operational performance
Why this appointment matters
Health systems increasingly need leaders who can connect clinical judgment with operational discipline. Erin’s mix of frontline care experience and system-level operations positions her to improve patient transitions, reduce friction in care delivery, and support more integrated, accessible services across Kaiser’s network.
CXO Gateway perspective
At CXO Gateway we see Erin’s rise as a good example of modern healthcare leadership: people who translate clinical empathy into operational results. Her path — from bedside social work through increasingly senior operational roles — shows how clinical experience can power meaningful improvements in patient care at scale.
